New Years 2020

Another year over And a new one just begun... - Merry X-mas (War is Over) - John Lennon, Yoko Ono Hello hello! Welcome out of your turkey-induced torpor and back to The Art of Caesura! I hope you are all having lovely, relaxing times with friends and family, and not bickering too much about who made a bad deal with whom in Monopoly.  Here on The Art of Caesura, I like to save the big annual retrospective for a few weeks' time when we celebrate the blog's birthday. Today lets look at the loot Santa gave me (and other accumulated bits from the year) that will feature on the blog in the year ahead!  Plus GW just announced new Kharadron Overlords, so they too will be in my future! I hope you too made the "nice" list and that you were spoiled rotten with various hobby (or non-hobby) surprises. See you next week on The Art of Caesura! Season's Greetings! - Christmas 2019

Viking christmas, it's viking christmas Officially we despise any of those christian customs But in secrecy we can't flee the christmas spell I bet you can't imagine how sentimental we can be: Bearded vikings reenact the nativity scene Viking Christmas - Amon Amarth Merry Christmas one and all! Let's welcome in the festive season on The Art of Caesura! This is a special Christmas for me - it's my first one as a dad! To help celebrate the season here on the blog are a few of the models that I painted this year, all in their festive finery! I hope you have a (M)aw-some Christmas (Ooooo that was like something out of a Christmas cracker!) Someone's getting coal for Christmas! Santa's little helper (but don't tell him that) Santa upgrades from a sleigh to an Ironclad. Look out! He's got his magic hat! Ewww, now it smells of Underhive. What does the fox say? "Merry Christmas", what else

"Her Screaming Essence" - Thorns of the Briar Queen - Part III

The Briar Queen was once a death mage of formidable power,  a great enemy of Shadespire whose undead armies  breached the city walls and threatened to tear down  all that the Katophranes had built.  Only after unthinkable bloodshed was the Briar Queen defeated,  captured and sentenced to an eternity of imprisonment  and torment in the Nightvault, far beneath the city streets. - Games Workshop Enter if you dare to The Art of Caesura! And now, after two weeks of looking at The Thorns at her side, I bring you The Briar Queen! This is such a cool model! Something I (and I think a lot of hobbyists) enjoy about Warhammer Underworlds is that you can paint a few models that you wouldn't normally have a "reason" to paint.  I wasn't about to start a new Nighthaunt army, but I wanted to have a go at painting the ghosts, so this was the perfect opportunity! As I mentioned before, I painted all of the Chainrasps together, but pain

"Death is Only the Beginning" - Thorns of the Briar Queen - Part II

The most numerous of all the spirits  that join Nighthaunt processions  are the Chainrasp Hordes.  These gheists are created from the spirits  of the most vicious and irredeemable criminals  to have lived in the Mortal Realms. - Games Workshop Welcome back to another Friday on The Art of Caesura! Lets pick right up where we left off last week with the Thorns of the Briar Queen. Last time we discussed all of the Contrast Paint elements. Highlighting these bits involved some fun colour-matching. Some parts were easy - the bone bits didn't really need any highlighting (such is the majesty of Skeleton Horde).  For their skin I only wanted very subtle highlights because I didn't want their ectoplasmic state to look to defined, and I though this would better contrast the strong textures of the metal elements. I started by shading the Nihilakh Oxide with 1:4 Nuln Oil: Lahmian Medium. I then highlighted the skin with a mix of approx 2:1 Gausbl

"Spirits of the Nightvault" - Thorns of the Briar Queen - Part I

This horde of Chainrasps is bound eternally to the will of the Briar Queen. At her wailed command they either flock to her side or surge outwards in search of new victims  upon whom she can sate her malice. - Games Workshop Welcome back to The Art of Caesura! These guys didn't quite make it in time for Hallowe'en, but they have now materialized! I bought Beastgrave (the new edition of Warhammer Underworlds) as soon as it came out, but tasked myself with completing the miniatures from Nightvault prior to opening it. I finished Stormsire's Cursebreakers ages ago , but for the ghosties - it's been a long wait! Two weeks ago we looked at how I have been painting my Moonclan Grots using only Contrast Paints so far. This week I wanted to see what I could accomplish using a combination of Contrast and Conventional paints. This was a fun exercise because it involved a lot of colour matching. Onwards! I started by undercoating the models with Imperial Primer
