Hey guys and gals, welcome back to The Art of Caesura!
I hope you guys enjoyed the last two weeks' more detailed focus at a large detailed model - The Hungering Darkness / Mourngul. I was excited that it generated a good bit of traffic for ye olde blog. As I said, I had a lot of fun building and painting that guy and he looks pretty creepy up on the book case now!
Now, this week we're heading back to the brewery that is our spare bathroom and taking a swig of the third batch of beer that I've brewed there: Mangrove Jacks' Columbus APA.
You may recall about a month ago when I was telling you about my embarrassing, convoluted measuring technique for this beer. So how did all that math turn out? Let's find out...
Colour: Ruby brown
Clarity: Cloudy
Head: Dissipates quickly (bugger it all!)
Aroma (hops): Grapefruit
Aroma (malt): Grain
Fruit flavours: Apple
Floral flavours: Geranium
Roasted flavours: Cracker
Spice flavours: Lemongrass
Sweet flavours: Golden syrup
Alcohol flavours: Musty
"Off" flavour and aromas: Barnyard
Mouthfeel: Effervescent
ABV: 5.1%
In plain speak, I was surprised by this beer. As an American Pale Ale (APA) I expected it to be a classic "session ale." A crowd-pleaser. Something akin to Blue Buck (by Phillips Brewery where I'm from) or a host of other easily drinkable beers that you can pretty much give anyone who drinks beer and they'll say "OHHHH YEAAAAAHHHHH." That's not what I ended up with. My beer is much more like an IPA than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, I love IPAs (even more than APAs) but the first beer I brewed on the blog: Lord Finster (code named: "Sabre") was such a glorious, unabashed IPA, where as this one isn't quite sure what it wants to be when it grows up.
My parents are coming to visit soon, so I wanted to have a nice easy beer to offer them. This one, with overtones of grapefruit, is a bit too esoteric me thinks. I guess I just wasn't expecting such an IPA from an APA, but maybe that was my fault in expectation.
I'm working my way through the Mangrove Jacks kits. I haven't yet set my sights on my next venture, but will be sure to tell you when I have.
Thanks everyone for coming by! I hope you too are guzzling some tasty brews!
Till next time on The Art of Caesura.
