"Gone Fishing!" - Slop

No wise fish would go anywhere  without a porpoise   Lewis Carroll - Alice in Wonderland Welcome back to The Art of Caesura! Before we really get cracking, I just want to send out a big congrats to my friend Podge, and his beautiful wife Liz who, by the time this gets posted will just be getting married! This week we're looking at the big baddie from Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower's slippery little compadre: Slop.  Two weeks ago we perused the pages of another quirky little familiar from this game, a book with legs, this week it's a bipedal fish! I'm really liking the zaniness of these little critters.  The nice thing about many of the models in the Silver Tower box is that there are at least doubles of all of them (except the heroes) so you can try different ideas with each figure without having to paint a whole army of the same thing.  My first effort with Slop was based on one of my early childhood memories: going fishing with my dad. When I was yo

"Pretty in Pink" - Pink Horrors

The casting of spells fills Pink Horrors with increased joy,  and they emit especially high-pitched merriment as the eldritch energy screeches from their upraised hands. When wounded, a Pink Horror exhales a final lunatic cackle before rapidly decomposing into an ectoplasmic blob of gyrating magic. With a characteristic whoop of satisfaction, this residue swiftly alters colour and divides into two Blue Horrors. ~ wiki Hey all! Welcome back to another Friday on The Art of Caesura! This week brings the merry big sibling of the grumpy Blue Horrors that I painted a couple of months ago. For those of you who have been following this blog for a while, you'll know that I kind of like things dark and eerie - if not in colour than in tone.  The Pink Horrors of Tzeentch don't typically fit the whole "dark and eerie" vibe, but regardless I decided to darken my palate a little and I ended up having a lot of fun with these nutters.   I want

"This Book Looks Familiar" - Blot

A book is proof that humans  are capable of working magic ~Carl Sagan Hi friends, welcome back to The Art of Caesura, Okay, I've been playing this really atmospheric, but really depressing video game called " This War of Mine ". It's an inspired take on war games, where instead of being a soldier and shootin'  'em all up, you control a group of wartime survivors (well, they're survivors if you don't suck). It's well made in the sense that you can't just save the game whenever you want. If your dudes (or dudettes) die, they're dead. That just happened to me. And it sucks.  Anyway on to this week's topic: Blot, the Gaunt Summoner's (the big baddie of Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower) little familiar. He's a book with legs.  I tried to paint one of these guys in a relatively traditional fashion, i.e. blue and gold. It was my first time attempt trying to paint text. Which, to pause for a second, is kind of an amaz

A Whole New World

"Following the light of the sun, we left the old world." ~Christopher Columbus Hey guys and gals, welcome back to The Art of Caesura! I hope you guys enjoyed the last two weeks' more detailed focus at a large detailed model - The Hungering Darkness / Mourngul. I was excited that it generated a good bit of traffic for ye olde blog. As I said, I had a lot of fun building and painting that guy and he looks pretty creepy up on the book case now! Now, this week we're heading back to the brewery that is our spare bathroom and taking a swig of the third batch of beer that I've brewed there: Mangrove Jacks' Columbus APA. You may recall about a month ago when I was telling you about my embarrassing, convoluted measuring technique for this beer. So how did all that math turn out? Let's find out... Colour : Ruby brown Clarity : Cloudy Head : Dissipates quickly (bugger it all!) Aroma (hops) : Grapefruit Aroma (malt) : Grain Frui

"The Colour of Darkness" - Mourngul / Hungering Darkness

The Hungering Darkness is a powerful spirit, an ancient entity that spreads its corrupting energies outward,  flooding the physical world with a rush of addictive magical energies called Brilliance. PullMyFinger - Malifaux M2E Wiki Happy Friday on The Art of Caesura! Last week I talked about building Forgeworld's Mourgul as a stand-in for Malifaux's The Hungering Darkness. This week we'll look at the finished painted product! I would encourage you, if I may, for greatest viewing pleasure, please click on the photos to scroll through enlarged versions.  I put heaps of thought into how I was going to paint this guy. I got a ton of inspiration from Mournguls that others had painted through the vastness of the interwebs. After painting my first Huggy D light larval colours that I felt worked well with his model, I knew I wanted to have one that was true to it's name: Darkness.  I started with an all-over base coat of Steel Legion Drab and darkened it
