Happy Birthday to Me!

Well hello there, fancy seeing you here for another Friday on The Art of Caesura! Today it's a short one to celebrate something that I've never celebrated on the blog before: My Birthday! I annually (duh!) celebrate the blog's birthday  (only a couple of months until its 6th birthday!) and I have recently started celebrating my daughters' birthdays on the blog, but I have never celebrated my own.  The reason for this is because I have wanted to keep the content hobby-oriented, but the more hobby-related media I consume, the more I realize that what attracts me (and likely others) to content is getting to know the person behind the content.  I can think of a bunch of podcasts that I listen to more for the banter of the hosts than for what they're talking about ( Trapped Under Plastic , Legends of the Painty Men , The 2 Ps Podcast ) and a blog that is a good example of this is Another Wargaming Blog  where his witty tone and personal asides only add to his posts.  So

"Cleanse and Burn" - Pious Vorne

Once a hive ganger, Pious Vorne  now fights alongside Taddeus the Purifier,  having discovered the joys of faith  (not to mention burning heretics). - Warhammer Community Hello one and all, and welcome to your weekly instalment of The Art of Caesura! A few weeks ago we looked at Taddeus the Purifier , today we're going to look at his psychotic acolyte: Pious Vorne. Pious is one of the adventurers that I am using in the campaign that my wife and I have on the go (along with the inimitable Janus Draik ). A Black Templar at heart , I was attracted by her fanaticism, hatred of heretics and big-ass flamer/chainsword. She's great in the game, able to set spaces of the board on fire to create traps and choke points. I use the flame tokens from my Hellboy board game for this, and they're perfect. She actually does a good bit of damage, but can't take much in return. Mechanically, she would actually be well-paired with Taddeus, because he could heal her, which is nice because th

"I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" - Radlands

"The game you will take with you through the apocalypse." - Roxley Games   Welcome to another Friday on The Art of Caesura! Today I want to tell you about a kickstarter that arrived the other week: Radlands! What was it that attracted me to this kickstarter? Was it the beautiful neon art direction? The promise of high quality, finely tuned game play? The idea that I could play a great game without feeling the need to paint loads of miniatures first? All of the above.  The Look: As you can see from the pictures here, and from their website , the aesthetics of this game are beautiful and arresting, and the quality is top notch. The "synth" cards are made out of a plastic material that is durable (water proof and bend-resistant) and feels really nice in the hand without being too slippery. The tokens that came with the Kickstarter edition are made out of basically backgammon pieces - they have a nice chunky weight. I could go on an on about the lovely vibrant and funct

"My Hobby Origin Story" - Black Templars

The beginning is the most important part of the work. - Plato Hello fellow hobbyists and welcome to another week of The Art of Caesura! Today my Black Templars army box arrived! While I was going to write about something else for today's post, its arrival inspired me to tell a story that I don't think I've told on the blog yet: the story of how I got into the hobby.  We all have our hobby origin stories, some of us had a friend or sibling who got us into Warhammer, some of us migrated over from D&D, some of us got bitten by a radioactive spider...anyway this is my story, and yes, it involves Black Templars.  As a kid, my dad and I had always built model fighter jets, and cars and all. And, like many of you, I remember trying to paint them with nasty enamel paints and those crappy flat-tipped, toothbrush-bristled brushes. So I had a background interest in models.  I was about twelve or thirteen when the third edition of Warhammer 40k came out. Some kid brought a Games Wo
