"Thrice Ripened" - Lord of Blights (adding colour)

Masters of the corpse orchards,  the Lords of Blights are responsible for creating  the blessed death’s heads.  These projectiles are doled out to their Rotbringers,  and hurled at the foe  to spread the plagues festering within. - Games Workshop Welcome back to your weekly respite here on The Art of Caesura! Today we are going to continue our look at a very special model. It is of the Lord of Blights that I painted at Marco Frisoni's workshop a few weeks ago. And I have to say, I think I really levelled-up painting this guy! If you're just joining us, I attended my first painting course recently, which you can read about here .  Last week I showed you the first stage of painting this guy - the value sketch. So today we'll look at adding the haunting and toxic colours.  Once I had my value sketch in place (see last week), it was time to start adding colour. Before working on the OSL effect, I blocked in the "local" colours; these are the colours that would actual

Question Point: What is Value Sketching?

Gray is the colour of  all theory. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Hello all and welcome to your weekly dose of The Art of Caesura! Last week , I excitedly gave you an overview of the first ever miniature painting course that I have taken, which was taught by the esteemed Marco Frisoni.  Marco filled our minds with applicable art theory, and one of the concepts that I want to delve deeper into today, is that of value sketching.  First let us define some terms: Firstly what do we mean by value ? Here's a helpful definition: Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. It defines a color in terms of how close it is to white or black. The lighter the color, the closer it is to white. The darker the color, the closer it is to black. For example, navy blue emits less light and has a lower value than sky blue. -  Sensational Color Here's a fun example of what value enables us to do in art. All the circles above are grey and flat (they're on your flat  computer / phone scree

My First Painting Class - Marco Frisoni

Following my obsession for miniatures  I had the chance to study,  improve my painting skills  and better understand this little form of art  under the guidance of incredibly talented  artists and awesome teachers - Marco Frisoni Hello Guys! Welcome to The Art of Caesura! Today I have something a bit special to tell you about: the first miniature painting course I have attended! Before Christmas, I saw that Marco Frisoni (one of the true talents in mini painting (almost 80 000 followers on Youtube) was doing a 2-day workshop in Dublin. It sold out almost immediately, so when I saw that he was doing another one in January, I immediately signed up.  The man himself! Underworld Gaming in Dublin - a brilliant venue I have never attended a miniature painting class before and mostly taught myself through Youtube tutorials . It was with a bit of excitement and a bit of trepidation that I thought about this class. Would everyone be better than me? Would it be a waste of time? Because it was a

Marshal Grymm - Part 5 - Complete!

To the darkness I bring fire.  To the ignorant I bring faith.  Those who welcome these gifts may live,  but I will visit naught but death and  eternal damnation on those who refuse them. - Helsreach, Aaron Dembski-Bowden Hello friends, and welcome back to The Art of Caesura! This post has been a long time coming! Today, we finally get to unveil Marshal Grymm in all his splendor.  If you're just tuning in, I've been going into detail about how I painted this Black Templars marshal (built from the Primaris Captain from the Imperium magazine and a left arm from the old Black Templars upgrade sprue), starting with The Plan , The Cloak and Armour , The Face and Base , and The Details . If you're interested in how I completed specific elements in these pictures, feel free to check out their linked posts above, or, better yet, leave me a comment below.  Over the past almost two months (what with a couple breaks for Christmas, New Years and the blog's birthday), I've said a
