Given the sheer number of threats

a lookalike seemed like an excellent

Greetings Fellows all, and welcome back to The Art of Caesura!
I hope you're enjoying this close look at the World of Smog minis as much as I'm enjoying painting them. I was going to take a break from them this week and post a couple beer related articles just to mix things up a bit, but I've actually been getting some really nice feedback on these guys, so I think we'll keep the momentum going for the final three of them!
This week it's Queen Victoria's personal aide and lookalike: Suzanne Taylor.
It's a great model, appropriately static and stoic, basically of Queen Victoria holding a massive steampunk Gatling gun (or multi-barreled rifle anyway). I looked up a bunch of pictures of Ol' Vicky for inspiration. Many paintings have her in black, but at this small scale I thought it would make her look too much like a maid. So I found this image, and put her in fetching navy blue.
After having painted a few of these guys now, I wanted to have some little hints to connect them, but also ensure that their colours differentiate them as individuals. A specific connection, is that I painted Suzanne Taylor's neck-kerchief and facinator the same fuchsia as Sir Daniel Home's kerchief. I started painting Ms. Taylor's upper-dress (the kind of shawl part) the same blues as Master Fox, but then finished it with a violet wash.
John Brown has all his own palate of deep forest greens, but the overall tonal palate, of deep and rich colours instead of my usual more washed-out, pastel palate, unifies these models.
I painted the Gatling gun brass (instead of iron) to warm up the register and contrast her deep blues. The same colour found its way into the rims of her spectacles (with a hint of pale blue for the lenses).
I painted her skin a bit differently than how I've ever done skin in the past. As I hinted in my New Years post, I recently bought Scale 75's flesh tone set. I'll tell you more about these at a later date, but suffice to say I am really happy with the softer, smoother look I was able to achieve on this 'handsome' woman.
Thank you all for popping by! We'll see you back next week on The Art of Caesura.
