It's Friday, and time for another post of The Art of Caesura!

Today's model has mixed inspirations; the actual miniature is from Monolith's Conan board game. I was originally going to paint it using natural wolf colours (I had even undercoated him with Steel Legion Drab), but I decided to mix things up.

I like the unnatural shape of this wolf: hunched and evil looking. The silhouette reminded me of the big black beast that the young Spartans hunt as their right of passage in the film version of Frank Miller's 300.

So then I had the idea to paint him with his "fur as dark as night" and it was from that point that I set on the unnatural blues.

I think the cool blues of his skin and darker fur provide a nice backdrop for his flaming red eyes.

There are some nice little details to be had, such as the scars on his hide and face.

A little element of interest, is that this miniature's face marked the first time I used a wet palette - I must say, I was VERY impressed. I felt like I was able to get blends on his face that were smoother than I would usually be able to accomplish for the same amount of effort.

Some of the blending might be a bit too subtle for the camera to really showcase, but then I don't go for as much contrast as I would if I were painting these as gaming pieces to be viewed from a few feet away.

Oh, I should note, that I intend to have my first blast of doing a snow base for this guy (again I think it will work well with his cool tones, and will be a further nod to the scene from 300). I will try to remember to update you with photos of the completed base once I have it done!
