The Full Stop - A Deep Dive into Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol

Welcome to Combat Patrol!  Whether you are a new recruit to Warhammer 40,000  or a seasoned veteran,  Combat Patrol is all about getting your forces  into action as quickly as possible. - Combat Patrol Rules - Games Workshop Welcome back to the Art of Caesura! Recent readers will see that we've been looking at our fun little Warhammer gathering, KillCon over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I provided a narrative verion of my game of Combat Patrol of my Black Templars vs. Tristan's Tyranids where as l ast week I gave a more "gamer oriented" play-by-play of the game.  Today I want to dive deeper into this accessible and engaging game-type. I want to argue that Combat Patrol is not just for beginners. Combat Patrol in 10th Edition is Games Workshop's new smallest scale Warhammer 40k game type. But unlike in previous editions, where it just meant that both sides took 500 point armies and went at it, in this edition, Games Workshop has changed things up a litt...

Combat Patrol Battle Report - Black Templars vs. Tyranids

Drive a spearhead through this area, clearing enemy objectives of resistance as you push forwards,  but do not allow the enemy to encircle us and cut off our supply lines. Sweeping Raid - Games Workshop Welcome gamer and hobbyists of all stripes to The Art of Caesura! Today is a slightly different one, I'm going to try to write up a bit of a battle report about my first game of 10th Edition Combat Patrol that I played a couple weeks ago. Last week , you might have read the narrative version of the game, but today I'll try to go through the broad strokes of having played the game and my in-the-moment thoughts and post-game reflections.  First, we can see those Black Templars who would not be partaking in the Combat Patrol game marching to battle to cheer on thier comrades! I would suggest that this post will be very technical into the gaming aspects of 40k. I am aware that this may not be of as much interest to those of you who usually tune in for my painting content, but ther...

"Shadows of Wrath" - Black Templars vs. Tyranids

Grinding stalemate has paralysed the battle lines, but a decisive blow can lance through the enemy defences... Combat Patrol Rules - Games Workshop Hello and welcome to The Art of Caesura! Last week , I was excited to tell you about KillCon, our fun (and first) gathering of local Warhammerers at our shiny new FLGS.  I mentioned that Combat Patrol was the game du jour and I played my Black Templars against Tris' Tyranids. We had such a banger of a game, that I was inspired to write some dodgy fan fiction about it which I shall foist upon you now: *** Picture By Brock Grossman *** Shadows of Wrath In the shadowed depths of the void, amidst the inky blackness of the galactic abyss, the Black Templars descended upon the beleaguered world of Sanctus Invictus. The planet, once a bastion of Imperial strength, had fallen prey to the insidious scourge of the Tyranids. These voracious xenos, their relentless hunger insatiable, had swarmed over the world like a devouring tide, leaving nothing...

KillCon!!

This is the power of gathering:  it inspires us - delightfully -  to be more hopeful, more joyful, more thoughtful: in a word, more alive. - Alice Waters Greetings one and all! Welcome back to The Art of Caesura! The impossible has happened. We had our first warhammer "convention" in the town in which I live, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland!  Welcome to KillCon! Some background: 1 year ago the nearest FLGS / Games Workshop shops were about 2 hours away. With young kids, it was not possible to be part of those communities. Through Facebook groups, I managed to find a core of people within about an hour of me who are into Warhammer, we set up a WhatsApp group, through which I managed to finagle  my first game of 40k in a couple decades.  About a year ago, a convenience store in town started carrying a limited supply of Games Workshop products (most importantly, Imperium Magazine). It was a big deal to be able to walk into a store and see the warhammer stuff I love. ...
