"What's Cooler than being Cool?" - Conan Man-ape

There is precious little in civilization  to appeal to a Yeti. - Edmund Hillary Greetings friends, and welcome back to The Art of Caesura! Today we're heading back to the Hyborian Age to take a look at another monster from Monolith's Conan Miniatures game .  I was perusing our local bookshop the other day and this book caught my eye: Like Mulder and Scully, I want to believe. How cool would it be to have as-of-yet undiscovered off-branchings of the Homo lineage living in the vast Himalayan range (and the epic forests of North America (Sasquatch).  Anyway, it inspired me to paint an Abominable Snowman of my own. Only problem was, I didn't have one.  What I did have was the Man-Ape from Monolith's Conan game.  It was the scraggly hair around this guy's head that really sold me on the idea of turning him into a Yeti.  The paint job on this guy was very quick, and I think a good application of how effective Contrast Paints can be when used with so...

"Plunder the Sartosan Coast" - Manann's Blades Command

The mercenary company of dark repute  that is led by Edvard Van Der Kraal  takes its name from the quixotic  and violent sea god of the Empire. - Warhammer Wiki Avast land-lubbers, hop aboard The Art of Caesura! To celebrate " International Talk Like a Pirate Day " tomorrow, today we'll be looking at a very scurvy scallywag: the champion from Manann's Blades. I really liked the idea of The Dogs of War in Warhammer's Old World. They were a ragtag army of mercenaries of every race. Aesthetically, they seemed like the sculptors' chance to really let loose. I still love Ruglud's Armoured Orcs and wish I had picked them up when they were still in production.  Anyway, after the Preyton over the past few weeks, I had been digging around in my box of old Forge World minis and found this fun little guy. I actually didn't have any clue who he was before I got started, but just loved his character, pose and peg-leg.  I star...

"Twisted and Hateful" - Preyton Part III

When they charge they use their blackened  and serrated antlers crashing into their foes  and shredding as much flesh as possible  with violent swings of their heads. -  Lexicanum You're all very welcome to The Art of Caesura! Today marks the third and final post regarding Forge World's Preyton. If you missed the first two, you can go back and check out the painting of the Preyton here , and the construction of the swamp base here .  As a quick side note, I found that someone has just recently made a mod to play with the Preyton in Total War: Warhammer ! Topical! I was very excited to take my dark and moody ( read: emo ) photos of this guy, because I hoped they would really drive home the desaturated palette and stark contrasts between light and dark. Let me know what you think.  I'm happy with how the textures turned out: the feathers and torn flesh, iridescent and glossy and the rest satin or matte.  I even entered this guy ...

"Making a Swamp Base" - Preyton Part II

There is peace in the swamp, though the quiet is Death. ~Bret Harte Welcome to a swampy setting today on The Art of Caesura! If you haven't had a chance to check out last week's post , I would suggest that it would be a good place to start. Last week we discussed the process of painting Forge World's Preyton, this week we're going to look at making a cool base for it! Before I started painting the Preyton, I had this image of it lurking through a swamp by moonlight, hence the super-desaturated colour scheme. All that remained...was to create the swamp!  I knew I wanted to include stagnant water to really sell the idea of the swamp. Initially I hoped to paint the reflection of the moonlight in the water, but as you'll see, I ran into enough issues with the water alone, so had to abandon that idea.  I started with just a stick that I broke into an interesting shape to complement the Preyton's twisted posture - stalking over a fallen tree. I...
