His battle-brothers follow him without question,
for they believe where High Marshal Helbrecht treads,
so too walks the Emperor himself.

Welcome one and all to The Art of Caesura!
If you are just joining us, then please enjoy these purdy pictures of High Marshal Helbrecht of the Black Templars!
If you've been 'round these parts a while, you'll be wondering what the hell's going on! Didn't we spend the month of March focusing on this guy? Well, dear reader, we certainly did - you're not going crazy! Me on the otherhand...
So, yes I spent 3 weeks on the blog (7 MONTHS AGO!) showing you my painting process for this guy (among the most time I have ever spent on one human-sized miniature) and then I bloody forgot to post the finished pictures!! So I'm doing that now! Better late than never.
After pushing my painting to the limit, I'm really really proud of how this guy turned out! I like how saturated and lustrous his gold armour looks, and I like the subtle light reflection on the Sword of the High Marshals.
At time of writing, Essen Speil (the massive German games festival) has just occurred and there was a beautiful Helbrecht with lovely saturated non-metalic metal armour which won a Golden Demon. As with anything in life, it is easy to compare yourself to others on social media - but to be totally honest with you, seeing his rendition did not diminish the pride I feel for mine at all, it just reinforced my love of this model and character.
There is something about Helbrecht's eye lenses against the white cross on his helm that I find reminiscent of Todd McFarlane's illustrations (Spawn) of which I'm a huge fan!
I'm really happy with the subtle environmental reflection on his cloak which I feel adds a lot of depth and interest. This isn't something that I'd done before, but was a further benefit of initially trying to follow Marco Frisoni's process.
I really pushed myself to render similar colours in very different ways across the model. Above, you can see the smooth white of his pauldron vs the more weathered white of his backpack vs. the textured off-white of the skulls and the sickly pallid skin of the servitors.
One of my favourite details of this miniature from the very instant that I clapped eyes on it was the Servitor cleaning the Sword of the High Marshals in medias res. It's just such a funny and Warhammery detail!
I'll just let the photos do the talking for a minute...
Please let me know your thoughts on this guy in the comments below! Have you painted this model? How did it go for you?
Man, I can't believe I forgot to post these picture of the finished model! Oh well, better late than never!
I'll see you next Friday on The Art of Caesura!
