"No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise."
Watchmen - Alan Moore
Hey friends! Grab a pint and join me for another dram of The Art of Caesura!
To follow-up from last week I want to thank you all again for tuning in over the past 6 months. I have a blast posting on here, and am chuffed that you guys come by to read it.
This week's post is a long time coming. It's a continuation from one a while ago - on how my Night Watchman Porter - that I teased you with back in May - turned out. Before I get into the nutty overtones, I just want to plug the first beer that I brewed back in February, Sabre. Okay, plugged.
So when I last told you about Night Watchman it had been merrily fermenting for 2 weeks and, according to the specific gravity reading (of 1.012 - I wanted it to be 1.009), still wasn't finished. I intended to check again a few days, maybe a week later, but life happened and it was another two weeks before I managed to check again.
At this point it was still 1.012 so at least fermentation was fini and I wasn't going to make any of my lovely new hipster bottles explode. Anyway, bottling day went off without any spillages for a change! Woo hoo! And I've been gloriously guzzling away on this tasty porter ever since.
Now, on to my official judgement:
Colour: Black
Clarity: Opaque
Head: Dissipates quickly (this is one of my main gripes about this beer)
Aroma (hops): Nutty
Aroma (malt): Cereal, espresso, dark chocolate
Fruit flavours: Plum / Prune
Floral flavours: Hay
Roasted flavours: Smoky, yeasty
Spice flavours: Nutmeg
Sweet flavours: Brown sugar
Alcohol flavours: Esters
"Off" flavour and aromas: Phenolic
Mouthfeel: Delicate
ABV: 5.5%
That is to say: a nice, enjoyable porter. It doesn't quite de-throne Sabre, but then, they are very different beasts.
Have you guys had any great porters recently? I'm in love with Stormy Port by Galway Bay Brewery and the only thing separating Night Watchman from Stormy Port is one percent of alcohol, a nice head and a bit of peatiness. For my Canadian peeps, try Long Boat by Phillips it's a un-subtle chocolate porter explosion, and Hoyne's Dark Matter for something more akin to Stormy Port (ie. genius)
What's next on the brewing menu you ask? This time I'm getting ahead of the game and starting brewing a new beer BEFORE I run out. I know - smarts. This time around it's: Mangrove Jacks': Columbus APA which will arrive in a few weeks.
Okay team! Thanks for joining me for a pint or two of The Art of Caesura. I hope you all have great weeks and I'll see you back here next time. Same time same place.
