"The Boss of the Badlands" - Orruk Wyvern

I'm all about that bass, 'bout that bass...

Meghan Trainor

Welcome to another happy Friday on the Art of Caesura!

I must have jinxed myself at the end of last week's post by questioning whether I'd be able to complete this Wyvern and basing project. At the final hurdle, disaster struck! I was in the process of trying to pin the wyvern to the base and I usually try to drill at right angles for strength, but for the wyvern's foot, I had to drill at a very oblique angle so I could run the rod up his lower leg to add support. Well, my bloody drill bit snapped and what's more, it broke off lodged in the hole.

For some people this wouldn't be much of an issue, but I live 2.5 hours away from the nearest hobby or robust hardware store and I don't have a car. I know there's this thing called the internet, but even shipping on that takes about 10 days...So it'll be a couple weeks until I'll be able to get a replacement - and at that stage I'll have to figure out if I have enough room left to drill alongside my previous hole.

Oh well.

I'll be sure to post updated pics once I have the whole mess sorted out, for now here's a "band-aid" solution:

Wyvern Roost

In good news I'm happy with how they turned out. I tried to keep the base very monochromatic with muted colours so as not to take away from the Orc and Wyvern. The dry badlandsy dirt contrasts the blue-greens of the wyvern hide. After leaving off with last week's Agrax Earthshade, I then drybrushed it up through to Ushabti Bone.

I employed some techniques that I'd learned from painting the Maw-Krusha to modernise the classic green paint scheme for the wyvern. For example, I painted the striations on the horns in the same manner. I also darkened the scales running down the middle of the wyvern's spine in a similar fashion and I painted the wing membranes in exactly the same way as I had for the Maw-Krusha.

To draw some attention to the wyvern's venomous tail, I painted the buldging venom sac a lighter tone before washing it with toxic purples. I line-highlighted the actual tail spike to make it look sharp, almost like obsidian. And finished off the venom droplets on the tail with Nurgle's Rot before splattering his mouth and face with its red vis-a-vis.

And at long last, here are some updated pics once I re-drilled the holes and pinned him to his base:

With the Maw-Krusha, that's two dragon-like creatures completed now, but not yet a "real dragon"! I might have picked one up when I was at Warhammer World, but that's a tale for another time!

Thanks for joining me with this wyvern, we'll see you next Friday on The Art of Caesura!

"The Skinny" - Scale 75 Flesh Paint Set Review

The complexion of a light-skinned face  divides into three zones: The forehead has a light golden colour  because it's freer of muscles and surface capillaries. The ears, cheeks and nose all lie within the central zone of the face.  Those areas have more capillaries carrying oxygenated blood near the surface, causing the reddish colour... The zone from the nose to the chin (where there are relatively more veins carrying blue deoxygenated blood) tends toward a bluish, greenish or greyish colour. Some artists accentuated this subtle bluish or greenish hue to bring out the reddish lip colour. Color and Light (page 156) - James Gurney Welcome all to The Art of Caesura! So I finished all the models in Warhammer Quest Silver Tower!! Wooohooo!! Now for something a bit different!  This week I'm going to do something I've never done on the blog before: write a review!! "From the City of Shadows" - Arkanaut Company (Painting - Part 1)

The City of Shadows has a dubious reputation  amongst the Overlords, often labelled pirates  or worse by other duardin of their rival sky-ports. Barak Mhornar - Games Workshop Welcome back to another Friday on The Art of Caesura! Let's pick it up from last week and dive right back in to the Arkanauts. Last time we saw them they were all grey and naked. No longer!! This is going to be part one of a two-parter on the painting of these guys before we look their bases and then at the finished Company in the following weeks. I was going to try to cram it all into one post, but wow there is a lot of detail on these guys, and we're in no hurry, so best to spread it out and give it all it's due.  Barak Zilfin Colour Scheme When the Kharadron Overlords first came out I was looking at all the colour schemes and thinking "man, Barak Zilfin all the way!  I mean look at all that copper!" But over the year, my tastes have...matured and I came to really
