"Like a Brick Wall" - Brick

He's big, he's dangerous,
and he's not smart enough to understand fear.

It's Friday! It's time for The Art of Caesura!

Today we're looking at one of the poster boys of Reichbusters, it's Brick!

This guy is the classic action hero - wielding two Vickers machine guns (which apparently required a 6- to 8-man team to operate) as if they were pistols! And as if that wasn't awesome enough, apparently one is loaded with armor piercing ammo while the other has explosive rounds! He's not subtle, but he sure will make a dent in a horde of zombies, or anything for that matter!

After cleaning the (minimal) mold lines, I drilled out his gun barrels before giving him a nice soapy bath to remove any mold-release fluid residue.

I painted him similarly to Brad, but actually painted him efficiently this time - not in the hodge-podge order that I painted Brad in for some reason.

Starting from a black undercoat, I base coated his skin with several thin coats of Cadian Fleshtone, his fatigues with Deathworld Forest, his beret and pouches and wrappings with Steel Legion Drab and the metal bits with Leadbelcher.

I preceded to clean up some of the details, painting his hat Mephiston Red, and trim and shoes Abaddon Black. I painted his hair and base Doombull Brown.

As you can see in the picture above, I then applied some contrast paints to filter the ammo into the brass range (Snakebite Leather) and the gun casings into a metallic black (Black Templar).

Next it was time for washes.

I washed his skin with Contrast Guilliman Flesh (a trick that I think works much better than Reikland Fleshshade), his fatigues with Athonian Camoshade, his bullets and Steel Legion Drab bits Agrax Earthshade, his steel bits Nuln Oil and his hat Carroburg Crimson.

Then it was just the fun matter of building up the highlights. For his skin, I glazed S75 Basic Flesh mixed with Pale Flesh. I originally gave him a bit of stubble (diluted Nuln Oil + Drakenhoff Nightshade) but ended up giving him a shave and painting over it again because I felt he suited the clean-shaven look.

I used Death Guard Green to highlight his fatigues, first mixing it with Deathworld Forest, then glazing it on its own.

For the backpack, straps and wrappings I first highlighted with Steel Legion Drab, then mixed in a bit of Ushabti Bone.

I painted the bullet tips with Contrast Fyreslayer Flesh to differentiate them a bit from the bullet casings.

Not wanting his beret to look too bright, I highlighted it by adding Cadian Fleshtone into the Mephiston Red, rather than using Evil Sunz Scarlet.

I finished him off by stippling Stormhost Silver onto the raised metal areas.

And that's Brick! Another hero ready to blast his way through a castle full of Nazi abominations!

"The Skinny" - Scale 75 Flesh Paint Set Review

The complexion of a light-skinned face  divides into three zones: The forehead has a light golden colour  because it's freer of muscles and surface capillaries. The ears, cheeks and nose all lie within the central zone of the face.  Those areas have more capillaries carrying oxygenated blood near the surface, causing the reddish colour... The zone from the nose to the chin (where there are relatively more veins carrying blue deoxygenated blood) tends toward a bluish, greenish or greyish colour. Some artists accentuated this subtle bluish or greenish hue to bring out the reddish lip colour. Color and Light (page 156) - James Gurney Welcome all to The Art of Caesura! So I finished all the models in Warhammer Quest Silver Tower!! Wooohooo!! Now for something a bit different!  This week I'm going to do something I've never done on the blog before: write a review!! Warhammer 40k for Beginners - Writing an Army List

Hello again good friends of the Caesura! I am glad to report that I am feeling much better than last week, recovered from most of my COVID symptoms. Continuing from last week's post , I'm ready to tell you more about the lists that JP and I took for my first game of Warhammer 40k in over a decade and a half.  I have tried to write this post for those who know very little about playing Warhammer 40k (which was me when I started preparing for this game).  So, I knew that I wanted to keep things straightforward for my first game and that we were playing to 500 points. For those non-warhammerites, this is basically the smallest game you can play - less moving parts to keep track of.  Here is my list again, but this time I will discuss what it all means, and my thought process behind each choice: + Stratagems [-1CP] + Stratagem: Revered Repositories [-1CP] This just means that before the game I used one of my finite resources ("Command Points") to buy a very fancy weapon (
