“Skedaddle boys ... it’s the law!”
Dredd - 2000AD
Welcome back to The Art of Caesura!
Last week, we embarked on this journey through space and time to look at some models that I painted almost exactly 3 years ago but never showed you. They are from Zombicide: Invader but I plan to also use them in Space Station Zero. We're starting things off with a bang, with one of my favourite minis of the lot (though you're going to hear me say that a lot): Judge Dredd!
<Ahem>...Excuse me, for legal reasons, this is NOT Judge Dredd but rather Preacher Karl. As an aside, it's always fun to try to figure out what the inspirations were for the official names that CMoN gave the characters. For this guy, I presume the "Preacher" part is: a reference to another profession where words carry power (Judge vs Preacher) and also perhaps to Garth Ennis - comic book writer best known for creating Preacher but he also wrote a significant amount of early Judge Dredd. And then the "Karl" part is undoubtedly a reference to Karl Urban who acted Dredd in the most recent (2012) film.
Anyway Preacher Karl is an awesome mini, and I made sure to paint him as Dredd-like as possible!
From a black undercoat, I layered up his...undercoat and body armour with a mix of Stegadon Scale Green and The Fang.
I added more and more Grey Seer to this mix for highlights.
I used Dawnstone to highlight the padding on his forearms and shoulders. Looking back, I realise that this should be green to match the comics, but I guess I just thought it looked better with the neutral tones.
To paint his iconic face shield, and using comic book images for reference, I started with two vertical lines of thinned Stegadon Scale Green...
...which I painted over with Scavenblight Dinge.
I painted the iconic red trim with Mephiston Red, coated with Flesh Tearers Red, then worked up with Evil Sunz Scarlet with a bit of Yriel Yellow added for the brightest highlights.
To keep with the pulpy vibe, I painted the tubing at his back with Kimera's Yellow Oxide and dulled it down with Agrax Earthshade.
Next up, all the metal was painted using Dark Aluminium...
...and then all the gold areas were painted with Retributor Armour, and highlighted with Relictor Gold (a colour that I completely forgot I had until right now).
And that's it! He sure is looking the business!
Next week, as we go through the photos of the completed model, I'll talk about the role he plays and the equipment he has in my Space Station Zero crew.
See you next Friday on The Art of Caesura!
