What a Kraken Year it's Been!

Aurelio Voltaire

WELCOME TO THE ART OF CAESURA'S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY!!

It's hard to believe that I've been at this every week for a year - and week after week you masochists keep coming back! Thank you!

6 months ago I reflected on how the blog was going. I even made my first infographic to celebrate (I know, we're wild here!). So here's an updated look at the first year of this happy little hobby blog from the South West of Ireland:

Click on the image so you can actually see it.

So how did I do? I'm really proud of all the little dudes I painted. The number I've done this year probably exceeds the number I've done in my previous 29 years of living! I think it was the massive diversity of models that kept my interest supercharged! That, and having you guys on here to motivate me!

Let's take a look at some of my better efforts. Please excuse the self indulgence - just go along with it, in true anniversary-blog style lets look back at my 5 favorite models that I painted this year (click on the pics to see more):

Top 5 models of the year:

5. Abomination (Malifaux) - This was only the second Malifaux dude I painted. I really like the scale and fine details of these miniatures. He's a nice mix of textures too, flesh and metal.

Malifaux

4. The Hybrid (The World of Smog: On Her Majesty's Service) - I said it at the time, but this is my favorite mini from The World of Smog: On Her Majesty's Service. He's just the pinnacle of Lovecraftian Victorian horror, three things I can scarcely get enough of!

The World of Smog

3. Knight Questor (Silver Tower) - I'm really really happy with how this guy turned out. It was fun to paint a good guy for a change, and to put my spin on his Baroque armor  I think the base and head swap really suit him.

Silver Tower

2. The Hungering Darkness (Mourngul, Forgeworld) - This was the first model in years that I have spent weeks and weeks on. I really wanted to push myself, blending the skin tones (and dark, necrotic skin tones at that!)

Mourngul, Forge World

 1. Gordrakk, The Fist of Gork on Bigteef (Age of Sigmar) - This was my biggest project of the year and an introduction to magnetizing (if you haven't read the article, click on the image below - I went magnetizing mad!). I'm loving the direction they've taken the Orcs - bigger and more dynamic.

And after all that gang, what do you think? Did I miss any that you really liked? Which were your favorites from this year?

We can't really do the top 5 models without at least mentioning my top brewed beer of the year. It was only a couple of weeks ago, but for those of you who missed it:

Great Redeemer Ale

A tasty brew that I'm still indulging in!

Let's Get Kraken:

Now, on to (another) main event...it wouldn't be a birthday with out KRAKEN...I mean CAKE...no, I do mean KRAKEN!!!

For the big bloggin' birthday party, I wanted to paint a special model. I chose the kraken from Monolith's Conan board game because he was appropriately huge and quite cool looking. Also a relatively new model that some of you may not have seen yet. I've been quietly working away on this guy for the past few weeks. I teased him last week with his tentacles heralding his arrival, and now without further ado...UNLEASH THE KRAKEN (Oh, P.S. I know he's technically the demon Thaug, but to me he's such a kraken!)

I wanted him to look like he could really belong under da sea. As usual, I spent ages deliberating on his colour scheme. I finally settled on the deep greeny-blue you saw last week. I didn't exactly know what the ridge running through his forehead was, so I kept with the theme and tried to paint it like a shell.

Although it didn't really turn out in the pictures, I glazed his eyes with a thin purple and then green wash to make them look really alien.

My fellow Caesurians, I don't think I can cram anymore into this post! Thank you so much for joining me over the past year, it's been a great adventure! I'm looking forward to many more to come on The Art of Caesura!

The Full Stop - Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood

The monstrous Deepwood has consumed the land.  No farms or fields remain. There is only corruption, rot and the endless shadow of the twisted trees. ~ Shadowborne Games Pot's Peace, Oathsworn. Welcome to The Art of Caesura! What's all this then, TWO posts in one day!? Well yes, you see timing is of the essence here. Today marks the 200th post of The Art of Caesura , so if you haven't had a chance to check out the celebratory post, please do so !  There is also a Kickstarter ongoing at the moment, that I am getting quite excited by, but it closes on Tuesday, so if I left it till next Friday to tell you about it...it would be too late! Hence, in a world first, two hits of The Art of Caesura in one day! Now onward, into the world of Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood ! The Full Stop - A Deep Dive into Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol

Welcome to Combat Patrol!  Whether you are a new recruit to Warhammer 40,000  or a seasoned veteran,  Combat Patrol is all about getting your forces  into action as quickly as possible. - Combat Patrol Rules - Games Workshop Welcome back to the Art of Caesura! Recent readers will see that we've been looking at our fun little Warhammer gathering, KillCon over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I provided a narrative verion of my game of Combat Patrol of my Black Templars vs. Tristan's Tyranids where as l ast week I gave a more "gamer oriented" play-by-play of the game.  Today I want to dive deeper into this accessible and engaging game-type. I want to argue that Combat Patrol is not just for beginners. Combat Patrol in 10th Edition is Games Workshop's new smallest scale Warhammer 40k game type. But unlike in previous editions, where it just meant that both sides took 500 point armies and went at it, in this edition, Games Workshop has changed things up a little

"The Skinny" - Scale 75 Flesh Paint Set Review

The complexion of a light-skinned face  divides into three zones: The forehead has a light golden colour  because it's freer of muscles and surface capillaries. The ears, cheeks and nose all lie within the central zone of the face.  Those areas have more capillaries carrying oxygenated blood near the surface, causing the reddish colour... The zone from the nose to the chin (where there are relatively more veins carrying blue deoxygenated blood) tends toward a bluish, greenish or greyish colour. Some artists accentuated this subtle bluish or greenish hue to bring out the reddish lip colour. Color and Light (page 156) - James Gurney Welcome all to The Art of Caesura! So I finished all the models in Warhammer Quest Silver Tower!! Wooohooo!! Now for something a bit different!  This week I'm going to do something I've never done on the blog before: write a review!! I've been wanting to write my thoughts on  Scale 75 's Flesh Paint Set for ov
