The British army never crushed so violent a rebellion as the one
that exploded in Bengal province. The insurgents blocked access
to the empire’s two vital resources: minerals and tea.
Welcome back to The Art of Caesura!
I had to laugh when I was listening to the 2Ps Podcast today. They mentioned how it is all they can do at the moment to not just drop everything else and start painting Blackstone Fortress. Man, I feel that!
But rather than flit off to the latest shiny thing, I'm being a good hobby panda and painting my way through The World of Smog: On Her Majesty's Service today. It's fun doing the busts of the good guys (The Gentlemen) of this game because I've already painted their full-body miniatures, so it's nice to get another go at them in a different scale.
When I painted the full-body miniature of Parvin, I struggled with her skin tone, but at the time I could hide her face under her big hat. With the bust, that wasn't an option, so I used it as an opportunity to really hone my skills at painting Indian skin.
I used the Scale 75 Flesh tone set that I have been using for a couple of years now, and am quite content with the tone I managed to produce (using African Shadow as my base and working it up with Pink Flesh). Previously I have highlighted African Shadow with Indian Shadow, but the latter has many more yellow hues that don't work brilliantly with the plum tones of African Shadow. This time around, I found that, by highlighting (towards the centre of the forehead) with Pink Flesh (mixed with African Shadow) I retained the nice warm tones.
Looking now at her "come hither" eyes, I think what she is missing are some dark eye-lashes. Hmmm, I might have to go back and fix that, I'll try to fire up a picture if I get the chance.
As I mentioned in my intro, it is fun trying to match some of the details of the full-body sculpts with their busts. I got a bit muddled this time though, and hadn't documented the colours I used for her dress as well as I might have and I didn't have the full-body sculpt in front of me while I was working on the bust. Unfortunately that meant that this time I verged more pink than firey red.
In retrospect, last time I think I started with a base of Doombull Brown + Evil Sunz Scarlett and worked up adding more Evil Sunz and some Yriel Yellow, to keep it in the red register.
This time, I started with Screamer Pink and washed it several times with Carroberg Crimson and a recess wash of Druchii Violet.
The copper details are Screaming Bell washed with Agrax Earthshade and highlighted with Hashut Copper.
I contrasted the warm orangey metal with the blue lenses of her goggles, painted like a gemstone and given a lick of gloss varnish to finish them off.
Having added this pyromaniac to the gang, we're going to take a break from World of Smog next week for a bit of a celebration...See you then on The Art of Caesura!
