A Quart of Ale is a Dish for a King

When things go wrong and will not come right,
though you do the best you can,
when life looks black as the hour of night -
a pint of plain is your only man...

Flann O’Brien

Hey Gang! Grab a pint and settle into The Art of Caesura.

Hope you all had loads of pancakes on Tuesday with tons of good ol' Canadian Maple Syrup!

As I mentioned at the end of last week’s post, this week is going to be a little bit different. Up until now I have been focusing this budding blog on one of my interests: miniatures, and specifically those from The World of Smog: On Her Majesty’s Service because these are crazy characterful minis that haven’t seen a whole ton of internet attention. In future posts I’m looking forward to talking about the latest miniature game that I’m getting into (and given my interests in Victorian steampunk horror, ten guesses what that game will be!) But today I want to give you a taste of one of my other interests: Beer!

Now, I could wax lyrical about beer forever, so I’ll just mention some of my favourites from the West Coasts of Canada and Ireland and next week I'll tell you about my own current home-brewing adventures!

I’m from an island off the West Coast of Canada that is blessed with a micro-brewery on every corner. Of the plethora of great brews to choose from, my faves are: Phillips Brewery (specifically their Blue Buck (an all-rounder Ale), their Phoenix lager (high praise coming from a dark beer kind of guy) and their Long Boat Chocolate Porter (especially when it was just a winter special in bombers – because I’m a hipster, and exclusive = better). I also like Hoyne’s Dark Matter, and Swans’ Raspberry Wheat beer. I would love to go on for days about all my favourite West Coast beers but maybe we’ll cap it for another time…

When it comes to Ireland: the 8 years that I've been here have been a really exciting time for craft beer; the number of breweries in Ireland have tripled in the past 4 years alone! I have literally seen the rise of craft beer here from the barely drinkable Galway Hooker to the “little too drinkable” Crean’s Lager. I love Galway Bay Brewery, especially their Buried at Sea and Stormy Port and also their double IPA Of Foam and Fury which recently won the Beoir Beer of the Year award for 2015! But have recently been getting into some tasty brews from my current neighbourhood. Killarney has a new brewery called Torc which only brews two beers, but their Amber Ale is gorgeous – and the bottles are minimalist and sexy too!

What are your favourite beers from your neck of the world? Let us know in the comments section below.

See you next week for another draught of The Art of Caesura.

Listening: Just a Dream (Cover) – Coco and the Butterfields
Reading: The Ice Twins – S.K. Tremayne
Gaming: Mad Max - Avalanche Studios, 2015
Drinking: Sabotage IPA – Trouble Brewing, Kildare, Ireland.

Next Week:

We’ll stick to the beer theme, and I’ll regale you with my recent brewing adventures.

The Full Stop - A Deep Dive into Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol

Welcome to Combat Patrol!  Whether you are a new recruit to Warhammer 40,000  or a seasoned veteran,  Combat Patrol is all about getting your forces  into action as quickly as possible. - Combat Patrol Rules - Games Workshop Welcome back to the Art of Caesura! Recent readers will see that we've been looking at our fun little Warhammer gathering, KillCon over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I provided a narrative verion of my game of Combat Patrol of my Black Templars vs. Tristan's Tyranids where as l ast week I gave a more "gamer oriented" play-by-play of the game.  Today I want to dive deeper into this accessible and engaging game-type. I want to argue that Combat Patrol is not just for beginners. Combat Patrol in 10th Edition is Games Workshop's new smallest scale Warhammer 40k game type. But unlike in previous editions, where it just meant that both sides took 500 point armies and went at it, in this edition, Games Workshop has changed things up a litt...

The Full Stop - Trench Crusade

The skies shall darken, the ground shall open up and the screams of the damned shall echo through the ages. - Novae Revelationes 99:24, Trench Crusade Greetings friends of the Caesura, and welcome back to your Friday dose of The Art of Caesura! I hope you are well, and I'm sending loads of positive vibes your way, especially if you need them today (and you will after reading of the awesome Grimdark horrors ahead).   Last week we left off looking at my plans and aspirations for Hive Fleet Klendathu, and today I had planned to show you the test model that I have painted for this Starship Troopers-inspired Tyranid force. However, something cool is afoot, and it's kind of time-sensitive... That's right - there's a Kickstarter (which has now raised over 2 million dollars!) for a very Grimdark miniatures skirmish game and it is due to end on Tuesday, so I decided to reschedule things on the blog a little to draw your attention to this before you miss your chance.  I am talki...

The monstrous Deepwood has consumed the land.  No farms or fields remain. There is only corruption, rot and the endless shadow of the twisted trees. ~ Shadowborne Games Pot's Peace, Oathsworn.
