We always have a choice,
and we can always choose to do what's right.
- Spider-Man 3
Hello hello! Good to see you again on The Art of Caesura!
And, before we get started, happy birthday to my brother whose birthday is TODAY!
BIFF! POW! THWACK! We're in the middle of a Super Heroes brawl at the moment here on the blog! Black Panther and now Spidey are squaring off against...some as yet unidentified baddies (more on them next week!)
Anyway, today it's back to my favourite superhero: Spider-Man!
I think Spider-Man is so popular because under the mask (and ignoring the whole "radioactive blood" thing) he's a "normal" teenager, he's relatable, and his comics (which I so enjoyed as a teenager) often have him dealing with real life issues and dastardly villainous monsters in equal measure.
But my love of Spider-Man began even before the comics...
When I was a kid, my brother and I were allowed to trek over this small mountain (large hill) near our house, to a corner store that had a machine that would dispense collectable superhero cards for a quarter. I collected almost all of the 1995 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man series that way (and by trading with my brother and friend down the road).
I still have all those cards, and just looking at them really brings me back to that time.
Even before I knew much about Spider-Man, I just thought he looked SO COOL! I was big into bugs as a kid, so that helped too!
Anyway, back to the model at hand:
It's a pretty fun pose for Spidey to be in; reminiscent of the covers of comics at the time. I also love the sculpted bases that these models come attached to. They really ground the model in a setting.
It's amazing to think that it's taken me over 30 years to paint my favourite superhero! I'll have to compare this one to the Spidey from Marvel Crisis Protocol when I ever get around to painting that one!
Thanks for joining me on this little nostalgia trip, I'll see you next week on The Art of Caesura!
