At time of reading I will be playing my first league game of 40k in a few hours - wish me luck!! I have been swotting away at the rules of the game in my spare seconds over the past 2 weeks, and we'll see how much I remember for my game. It will be against T'au, which I have played against before, but a different opponent, and a very different list.
Anyway, one of the units that I will be fielding will be these chonky bois, the aptly named Heavy Intercessors.
I love many of the models in Gravis armour- I love these guys, I love Eradicators - they just look so bulky and badass! I secretly suspect that Games Workshop originally intended for Gravis armour (and specifically Aggressors) to be the Primaris Version of Terminator armour - they have a lot of similar design cues: overhead cowling, Aggressors have powerfists with integrated bolt weapons, they are top-heavy in silhouette and kind of lumbering. I like the look of these Gravis guys, but I'm glad they brought back "real" Terminators.
I painted these guys just as I paint all of my Black Templars, you can see the paints presented in this post, but for a detailed run-down of how and why I paint them the way I do, you can check out this detailed post.
With the black armour complete, I move onto the pauldrons, and while I do, I'll tell you a little about these big guys.
They are not the most "Black Templary" of units - being somewhat decent at shooting where Templars excel in close combat. Where I have found them to be very useful in many games is in resolutely holding a back objective, and plinking off a few shots here and there.
With 3 Wounds each and Toughness 6(!) plus a defensive ability which improves their armour save to 2+ if they're on an objective, they can be seriously difficult to shift. I can recall three games where my opponents didn't take them seriously enough, bringing in weaker units to clear them off as if they were regular Intercessors only to be held in combat for a few turns and never claim the objective (these guys are OC 2).
Don't get me wrong, these guys aren't a "meta-pick" by any stretch of the imagination - not for Black Templars anyway, we don't have any strategems or other units that *** with them, and at 100 points there are better options for objective holders that are difficult to shift (Combi-Lieutenant comes to mind). Even their vanilla brethren, the regular Intercessors, put out twice as many shots (albeit at half the damage) and can "sticky" objectives.
For these reasons, these guys don't feature in my "final" league list that I will be evolving towards. But regardless of all that, they were A LOT of fun to paint!
You guys know that I love painting faces for my Sergeants. I only got to paint half a face here, but it was still fun to do so.
I tried to emphasize the nice ugly scar on his right eye, giving him the ol' blasted eye on that side. I further differentiated him by keeping the fields of his pauldrons all black (as I do for all my Sergeants). I even used one of the Terminator shoulder pads from the VERY old Black Templar upgrade set for his left pauldron. If fit perfectly - coincidence? I think...maybe (see my tinfoil hat conspiracies above).
Despite loads of MicroSol and MicroSet on the decal on his left leg, I couldn't get the "painted on" look that I usually achieve. Not exactly sure what happened there as they worked perfectly elsewhere on the models.
Anyway, I absolutely thrilled with how these guys turned out and they were great fun to paint. Let's hope they blast a few Pathfinders away in my game today!
