"Vroom vroom" - Buying an Electric Car

With great power comes
an even greater electricity bill!

Recently we decided to step into the near future and buy an electric car! Here's a little taster to waylay the fears of anyone considering something similar.

It all started at a gathering of parents from my daughter's class. I got talking to a dad-friend and he put me onto this brilliant video:

The video is fun because the speaker is funny and he cleverly reverses the paradigm in a way that opened my eyes to the real benefits of an electric car.

Actually, if I'm truly honest, my fascination with electric cars really started 20 years earlier when I saw this film with my mum at my university movie theatre.

Hard to believe that was TWENTY YEARS ago!

Anyway, there is a curious point in any significant purchase where you realise you are no longer shopping. You're researching, then creating spreadsheets, then watching YouTube videos, enthusiastically discussing charging curves.

Eventually, somewhere between "What is a kilowatt-hour?" and "Do I really need vehicle-to-load capability?", I discovered that I'd accidentally developed a hobby. This happens to me frighteningly often (see my six weeks of coverage on 3D printers).

I'm not a car person (or I wasn't, anyway), and like many non-car-people, my first impression of electric cars wasn't excitement, it was anxiety.

"What if the battery dies?"

"How long do they really last?"

"Will we spend every family holiday sitting in motorway service stations eating junk food while waiting for enough electrons to cross a membrane...or cathode...or something..."

Well, it turns out that, in Ireland anyway, it's all pretty straight forward. The technology has advanced enough that pretty much all electric cars have a big enough battery (Ireland is a small country, but even still, few people have a daily commute of over 450km!) and in pretty much all situations we came across, the battery has a longer warranty than the rest of the car! A nice fact to remember is that nobody fills their petrol car every night, but you can wake up every morning with a "full tank" in an EV.

We narrowed our search quite easily by realising that we still needed a 7-seater and without an unlimited budget there were really only a few options.

After a bit of toing-and-froing we have landed on the Peugeot E5008, and what a beauty she is...well, he actually. In a house of women, I'm vying for the car to be called "Leo" (inspired by the Peugeot logo of a rampant lion, and by Leonardo being the blue ninja turtle). The colour of the car is called "Obsession Blue" and it's accurate. I am obsessed.

To be honest, if we could have picked any car (without the constraint of wanting a 7-seater) I would have gone for a relative newcomer in Ireland: Leapmotor's C10. It has all the bells and whistles by default (including an expansive panoramic sunroof) and is made out of nuclear submarine-grade steel. But it only comes in a 5-seater. Here's a promotional shot of the Leapmotor:

We've owned the car for a week and a day now and we're all already in love with it. We've already gone on a roadtrip, we've public charged, we've granny-charged. We're becoming EV drivers - those kind of people!

The search began with range anxiety. It ended with excitement.

In between, we flirted with futuristic design, we admired Scandinavian practicality, we almost fell head over heels for an unexpected outsider with an enormous sunroof and we've ended up with a car we love...and I've ended up with another new hobby to boot!

See you next week when we get to the beginning of the end of my Space Station Zero team! See you then on The Art of Caesura!

The Full Stop - Trench Crusade

The skies shall darken, the ground shall open up and the screams of the damned shall echo through the ages. - Novae Revelationes 99:24, Trench Crusade Greetings friends of the Caesura, and welcome back to your Friday dose of The Art of Caesura! I hope you are well, and I'm sending loads of positive vibes your way, especially if you need them today (and you will after reading of the awesome Grimdark horrors ahead).   Last week we left off looking at my plans and aspirations for Hive Fleet Klendathu, and today I had planned to show you the test model that I have painted for this Starship Troopers-inspired Tyranid force. However, something cool is afoot, and it's kind of time-sensitive... That's right - there's a Kickstarter (which has now raised over 2 million dollars!) for a very Grimdark miniatures skirmish game and it is due to end on Tuesday, so I decided to reschedule things on the blog a little to draw your attention to this before you miss your chance.  I am talki...

The Full Stop - A Deep Dive into Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol

Welcome to Combat Patrol!  Whether you are a new recruit to Warhammer 40,000  or a seasoned veteran,  Combat Patrol is all about getting your forces  into action as quickly as possible. - Combat Patrol Rules - Games Workshop Welcome back to the Art of Caesura! Recent readers will see that we've been looking at our fun little Warhammer gathering, KillCon over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I provided a narrative verion of my game of Combat Patrol of my Black Templars vs. Tristan's Tyranids where as l ast week I gave a more "gamer oriented" play-by-play of the game.  Today I want to dive deeper into this accessible and engaging game-type. I want to argue that Combat Patrol is not just for beginners. Combat Patrol in 10th Edition is Games Workshop's new smallest scale Warhammer 40k game type. But unlike in previous editions, where it just meant that both sides took 500 point armies and went at it, in this edition, Games Workshop has changed things up a litt...

"Righteous Crusaders" - New Black Templars Stuff and Strategies

"Accept any challenge no matter the odds!" Black Templars Codex Hello and welcome back to The Art of Caesura! I'm sending loads of positivity your way, especially if you need it today! Today we're changing gears a bit. I had meant for this post to come out last week, but that was before I had realized that I had neglected the poor Emberling .  So a few weeks ago now at this point, my beloved Black Templars (the army that I have played since 3rd edition of Warhammer 40k - which is now in its 10th edition!) received a revamp! New codex (which brought all new rules, new points, new style of play), new models, new dice, new Combat Patrol .  For someone like me, who historically has only got a game in every 6 months or so (that's about to change - tune back in next week!) and who has many (MANY) other hobby interests, the new rules are very exciting but also met with some trepidation of investing the time to relearn everything.  Well, I have started investing the time...
