Heil og sæl! Welcome to The Art of Caesura!

When I painted this guy a few months ago, Vikings were really in my zeitgeist: I was binging "The Last Kingdom", I was really trying hard to resist Mythic Games' "Hel" kickstarter which was running at the time (somehow I managed to resist!) and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla had just been announced to much fan-fare. So when I picked up this model I was thoroughly in the mood to paint a Viking!

Zombicide: Green Horde

Upon first seeing Hyg's model I knew I was going to love painting it. I would be able to go mad with my preferred neutral palette, broken up with cold hard steel and a ruddy complexion.

Although I started him from a Wraithbone undercoat, I didn't really use many Contrast Paints on him.

Zombicide: Green Horde

One new thing that I tried was covering his Steel Legion Drab cloak with Contrast Black Templar before re-highlighting with Steel Legion mixed with black and then on its own. I think this gave the cloak some cool depth that wouldn't have been as prominent if I'd used Nuln Oil.

The other thing I did a bit differently was to stipple the highlights on - this gave a lot of texture especially to his jerkin.

Zombicide: Green Horde

I have increased the contrast of my metals, going straight from Leadbelcher with Nuln Oil, to Stormhost Silver. Previously I would have highlighted through Leadbelcher again then Runefang Steel. But taking a more direct leap and again stippling the highlights actually looks better to me - it differentiates the hard lustrous surface of the metal from the cloth.

Zombicide: Green Horde

Although his palette is quite neutral, it still uses many different shades: Snakebite Leather for his shoes, Steel Legion Drab for his pants, Ushabti Bone for his shirt, and Doombull Brown and Skrag Brown for his leather straps. These were all washed with Agrax Earthshade to bring them together.

Zombicide: Green Horde

Finally, his face. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I think it looks rugged and weather-worn without being too overdone. I just took my time with the S75 flesh paints - working between several extremely thin glazes of Indian Shadow for the ruddiness and hightlights of Basic + Pale Flesh for his scars.

His Nordic hair started as Averland Sunset mixed with Steel Legion Drab and I glazed the sides of his head with this mix for that stubble effect.

What a blast to paint a viking for a zombie orc game - and he's a monster in the game too, especially starting with that Norse Sword...

Tune in next Friday to The Art of Caesura!

"The Skinny" - Scale 75 Flesh Paint Set Review

The complexion of a light-skinned face  divides into three zones: The forehead has a light golden colour  because it's freer of muscles and surface capillaries. The ears, cheeks and nose all lie within the central zone of the face.  Those areas have more capillaries carrying oxygenated blood near the surface, causing the reddish colour... The zone from the nose to the chin (where there are relatively more veins carrying blue deoxygenated blood) tends toward a bluish, greenish or greyish colour. Some artists accentuated this subtle bluish or greenish hue to bring out the reddish lip colour. Color and Light (page 156) - James Gurney Welcome all to The Art of Caesura! So I finished all the models in Warhammer Quest Silver Tower!! Wooohooo!! Now for something a bit different!  This week I'm going to do something I've never done on the blog before: write a review!! Warhammer 40k for Beginners - Writing an Army List

Hello again good friends of the Caesura! I am glad to report that I am feeling much better than last week, recovered from most of my COVID symptoms. Continuing from last week's post , I'm ready to tell you more about the lists that JP and I took for my first game of Warhammer 40k in over a decade and a half.  I have tried to write this post for those who know very little about playing Warhammer 40k (which was me when I started preparing for this game).  So, I knew that I wanted to keep things straightforward for my first game and that we were playing to 500 points. For those non-warhammerites, this is basically the smallest game you can play - less moving parts to keep track of.  Here is my list again, but this time I will discuss what it all means, and my thought process behind each choice: + Stratagems [-1CP] + Stratagem: Revered Repositories [-1CP] This just means that before the game I used one of my finite resources ("Command Points") to buy a very fancy weapon (
