"FACEPLOSION!!" - The Hybrid

“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming” ~H.P. Lovecraft Hello hello! Come on in for another dose of The Art of Caesura! Easter’s just around the corner so happy hunting (for eggs, not bunnies!) Hope you enjoyed the last week’s musical interlude. At the end of last week’s post, I teased that I’d be painting up and showing off my favourite World of Smog mini this week. And well, here he / it is: The Hybrid "Sir Robert Ball, the Royal Astronomer, became the first listed victim of the celestial visitors when they began waking up. Pushed by a larval instinct that knew no humanity or morals, the creatures sought a living host to understand their environment..."              The World of Smog: On Her Majesty's Service I recently read H.P. Lovecraft’s complete works, and am currently consuming Alan Moore’s Providence , plus I just have a baseline love for Victorian Steam-punk Horror so, suffice to...

In the Band

Sometimes you have to leave your zone of safety, you have to manufacture Inspirado. You gotta get out of the apartment. You've got to run with the wolves. You have to dive into the ocean bite with the sharks, or sometimes just treat yourself to an ice cream sundae with nuts. Jack Black Hey guys and gals! Welcome back to The Art of Caesura, Rome was magnificent! We just arrived back the other day – in time for St. Paddy’s Day! After introducing you to some of my music-making pals last week, this week I want to share some of the music that’s been made with some truly wonderful people along the way. I’m afraid this is going to be a bit of a random little collection of songs I still have access to. There’s always a bunch of stuff hidden on some old CDs or laptop somewhere, but I found a few ditties on my old iPod to give your ears a taste. My main band experience was throughout my undergrad, I co-founded and played and sang in an Irish Folk-Punk band ...

"Aweary of this Great World" - Guitars

I love the sound of the trees in the breeze.  If the forest is so clearly musical,  why can’t it play the guitar while I sing Nirvana covers? Jarod Kintz, This Book is Not FOR SALE Hey everyone, welcome back to another session of The Art of Caesura! I hope you’ve all had a good week and are hanging up the shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day next Thursday! I’m heading to Rome in the morning for a few days which I’m super-excited about, but don’t worry I’ll be back in time for next week’s entry! This week I wanted to talk about another hobby of mine: we’ve been looking at miniatures , drinking some beer , and how about adding some guitar to the mix? Just to whet your appetite: Now, today I want to introduce you to two of my pals and the stories behind them: Portia and Vlad. My parents bought Portia for me when I graduated from my undergrad. Her name came about because, from the body shape she’s clearly female, and with the Florenti...

"A Death-Black Shadow" - Shadow Master

There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. Anthem , Leonard Cohen Salutations, and welcome to another episode of The Art of Caesura! Boy, what a week! Filled with wedding venue viewing awesomeness and exam un-awesomeness. Nice to be back here. Since I first started pouring through the lore behind the game The World of Smog , I’ve been captivated by the character of The Shadow Master . I guess after four posts on this game I should tell you a bit more about it. It’s set in the late 1800’s in the standard Alternate-Victorian era to which most steam-punk identifies. Vikki’s jubilee is coming up and all of the gentlemen’s clubs (read gathering places for like-minded avant-garde aristocrats; as opposed to strip clubs) vie to increase their reputation by electing a member to get the Queen the best pressies for her party. Obviously the most sought-after artifacts, things like Mithril rings and Atlantean keys, are only available at the myst...

"Under the Horse-Head Mask" - Lost Boy

Well here we come, Innocent Friends to ask leave to ask leave to ask leave to sing... A common opening to the pwngco Well here we go! Thanks for finding your way back to The Art of Caesura! I hope you used the weekend to sample many lovely brews! For those of you who have been here since the beginning , you’ll know that this blog kind of came out of making some New Year resolutions. I’ve been sharing with you the weekly miniatures that I have been completing, and over the past two weeks have described elements of my third resolution. In the future I’d like to be able to include you (via this blog) in my other happy hobbies like guitar, hiking, and SCUBA. But this week I’m looking forward to showing you the model that I’ve been working on…back to The World of Smog! The Lost Boy “Some have claimed that [The Lost Boy] is the fruit of the forbidden love between an important Member of Parliament and a soothsayer of the Wheel, taken at his birth by age...

Let it Beer

Welcome back to another taste of The Art of Caesura! I hope the week hasn’t been too hectic, and that you have a great weekend lined up! Last time I plied you with some of my favourite beers from the west coasts of two small Islands, this week I’d like to show you my recent U-brew efforts. For the past month I’ve been brewing a craft beer from the Mangrove Jack’s line called LordFinster (a dark English bitter-style ale). I just had my bottling day a few days ago, but let me get you up to speed on what I’ve been up to in the background for about the length of time this blog has been running. Here is my set-up. My fiancée got me a robust plastic bucket fermenter with all the fixin’s (water seal, siphons, bottle brush, bottle caps, bottle cap capper, filling wand, hydrometer, thermometer…not to mention the actual kit with the liquid malt extract (LME), dry hops and yeast). I know, she’s a keeper! After five days of fermentatio...

A Quart of Ale is a Dish for a King

When things go wrong and will not come right, though you do the best you can, when life looks black as the hour of night - a pint of plain is your only man... Flann O’Brien Hey Gang! Grab a pint and settle into The Art of Caesura. Hope you all had loads of pancakes on Tuesday with tons of good ol' Canadian Maple Syrup! As I mentioned at the end of last week’s post , this week is going to be a little bit different. Up until now I have been focusing this budding blog on one of my interests: miniatures, and specifically those from The World of Smog: On Her Majesty’s Service because these are crazy characterful minis that haven’t seen a whole ton of internet attention. In future posts I’m looking forward to talking about the latest miniature game that I’m getting into (and given my interests in Victorian steampunk horror, ten guesses what that game will be!) But today I want to give you a taste of one of my other interests: Beer! Now, I could wax lyrical ab...
